Hawai`i’s judicial branch is a unified state court system that functions under one administrative head, the Chief Justice of the Hawai`i Supreme Court. The Hawai`i State Judiciary consists of: The Supreme Court – The Supreme Court – State’s highest court makes binding decisions over appeals from the lower courts upon discretionary appeal or transfer from the Intermediate Court of Appeals and cases eligible to be heard directly by the Hawai`i Supreme Court.

The Judiciary is one of three branches of state government in Hawai`i. The other two are the executive and legislative branches. As an independent government branch, the Judiciary is responsible for administering justice in an impartial, efficient and accessible manner according to the law.

The Hawaii State Intermediate Court of Appeals holds jurisdiction over appeals originating in lower courts. They have 6 judicial positions with 10 year terms each. The Hawaii State Circuit Courts are trial courts of general jurisdiction. They serve as the primary civil and criminal courts of Hawaii.
